FAQ’s for Tarpon!
When is Boca Grande tarpon season?
Typically starts end of April and runs through July with peak fishing May/June
What is the best month?
May/June
Where do we meet?
All Boca tarpon trips meet at Placida Boat Ramp - 6499 Gasparilla Rd. Placida, FL
What is the group size?
Ideally 2 anglers. Legally we cannot fish more than 3 lines at a time. While spectators are permitted, the less clutter and people the better your chances. Boat can legally take up to 6 but this is not conducive to tarpon fishing.
How long are trips?
Tarpon trips run 6hrs from 6am-12 or 1-7pm.
How much is the trip?
Pricing is $1200 for 6 hours.
Are tarpon catch and release?
Absolutely. Tarpon are not legally allowed to be removed from the water. Should you want a mount we can get a length and girth of your fish and order a replica.
Is this good for kids?
No. Most kids that are under 18 are not able to handle long days in the sun along with fighting a fish for over an hour.
What if weather is bad?
We will reschedule.
What should we bring?
I’ll have a cooler with waters, so any drinks snacks, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses.
How early should we book?
Ideally beginning of the year to just a few weeks in advance my schedule fills up.
Why are tide windows important?
Yes and no, I have caught tarpon on every tide possible but the larger outgoing tides are the best. However we like to avoid the new and full moons when tarpon move offshore to spawn.
Do you fish Boca Grande Pass only or surrounding areas too?
Tarpon are most commonly found in the pass however there are plentiful on the beaches, sometimes offshore and little gasparilla pass. Every day is a little different and requires flexibility sometimes.
Boca Grade and Charlotte Harbor provide the best opportunity for you to land your fish of a lifetime! These fish average between 80-130lbs with the biggest of them coming in over 200LBS!!! With the sheer number of tarpon that move through the area, seeing these fish fly and getting one to the boat is our number one priority! Tarpon migrate from the Florida Keys up the coast of Florida, stopping around the “passes” (these are the entrances from intercostal waters or estuaries) to feed on pass crabs. Tarpon are willing to eat almost anything but their favorite food is a “Pass Crab”. The crabs will flush out of the passes on new and full moons when the tides are the highest and the outflows are the strongest. While there are many passes up the West Coast of Florida - Boca Grande Pass is the best - by far. It is the deepest pass with towering water over 80Ft deep. With both the Peace and Myakka rivers flowing into Charlotte harbor and many many miles of undeveloped coast line - the crab life is prime for these Tarpon to feast heavily. It is estimated that over 5000 Tarpon are landed every Spring in Boca Grande and what better way to catch a fish of a lifetime!!!
Boca Grande is Located Near Venice/Englewood. Hotels are plentiful in the surrounding area, best recommendation would be the Sunseeker Resort in Charlotte Harbor.
